Information for Students

Leaving university with a good degree is no longer enough to guarantee you will get the graduate job you want.

With more students than ever entering higher education, companies are demanding graduates employees with relevant work experience.

This is where The Year in Industry will help.

There are opportunities in all branches of engineering, science, computing and business and much more. You will get the opportunity to undertake interesting projects and learn how business works. The skills you develop will enhance your University education and maximise your graduate job prospects.

The Year in Industry has been finding quality, paid, degree-relevant work placements for students since 1987. Over 250 UK companies take part each year and we have placed over 8500 students to date.

We help talented pre university and undergraduate students find the best work placements across the UK. Placements generally last about 12 months and in that time you can expect to earn a competitive salary.

You will receive full support from The Year In Industry throughout the year through a mentoring service, including on-site visits.  The Year in Industry also will aim to provide free management training to all students, although due to funding restrictions there may be some nationality restrictions.

Many companies view The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate recruitment programme, and go on to sponsor placement students through university. Around a quarter of all our placed students are sponsored each year.

You can apply online or download an application form and send it to your nearest regional office.

Are you ready for the challenge?

See the attachment on this page for help and advice for completing the application form and making your CV effective, as well as hints and tips for a successful interview.

Testimonials

My year at National Grid Transco has been really valuable. Having to organise my life around a full-time job has been a great learning curve, and I'm sure it will stand be in good stead for university.
Alexander Dunhill, Physics, National Grid Transco. Winner of the Yorkshire Region Contribution to the Business Award 2005

My year out has been a fast and furious one. The work at times was hard but the reward of working through each problem was indescribable. The sheer amount of experience that I have gained over the last 15 months has been invaluable. I would without hesitation recommend the scheme. I would just like to say thank you to the Year in Industry for giving me this amazing opportunity.
Stephen Roe, Electronic Engineering, Analox Sensor Technology Ltd. Winner of North East region Contribution to the Business Award 2005

This year has probably been the best of my life so far and working for Shell in Aberdeen has been amazing. I've learnt a lot during my year and I've met some great people. The projects I worked on were very challenging but the feeling of satisfaction after they were complete made it all worth while.
Emma Stephenson, Aeronautical Engineering, Shell U.K. Ltd. Winner of Scotland region Contribution to the Business Award 2005
