New technologies for testing the combustion units of jet engines

Summary

Oliver’s main project at Rolls-Royce was to consider new technologies to assist testing of the combustion units of jet engines. The solutions were potentially complex, as different fixtures were used for combustion units for different engines. Oliver designed a fixture capable of accommodating the full range of combustor walls.

Results

The new fixture is easy to operate, provides accurate results and will achieve significant cost savings. The final production model has been put out to suppliers for quotation with a view to production and Oliver hopes it will be in operation by the time he finishes his year at the company. Over a 5 year period the projected cost savings to the business are in excess of £205,500 with the additional benefit of moving the inspection technology capability forward which could lead to further cost benefits.

“Oliver has proven himself to be more than capable of operating in a highly technical environment, colleagues commenting that the company could do with more people like Oliver - confident, polite, hard working and communicative.”

Gemma Young, Principal Manufacturing Engineer, Rolls-Royce
