Improving productivity through lean manufacturing

Summary

Sophie was tasked with improving productivity in one area of Exception EMS by implementing lean manufacturing tools and techniques. Sophie introduced the new Rotork Kanban Cell and extended the Kanban principles into the supply chain for Exception EMS. Sophie also worked with external suppliers to extend the project benefits to not only reduce WIP (Work in Progress) and inventory on the line but also to reduce Raw Material inventory and decrease lead times on the expensive raw materials.

Results

The improvements that Sophie has made in the cell have resulted in a reduction in cycle times and, consequently, a labour saving of £12,000 pa. This has led to Exception consistently exceeding 95% on time delivery of the product since March.

By extending her project into the supply chain Sophie eliminated double handling of the product and has cut inventory holdings by £50,000.

“The Year in Industry scheme is excellent. In the case of Sophie, she demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm, commitment and a thirst for knowledge that led to the significant tangible results she achieved for the company.”

Mark Davies, Operations Director at Exception EMS
